Fed: Virgin wants Ansett tax scrapped
MELBOURNE, Dec 21 AAP - Virgin Airlines today challenged the federal government toimmediately drop the $10 Ansett levy on airline tickets as a Christmas present to travellers.
Yesterday's ruling by the Victorian Supreme Court, which cleared the way for Ansettadministrators to distribute the balance of employee entitlements, meant the tax was nolonger needed, Virgin Blue spokesman David Huttner said.
"The idea of the Ansett levy was to cover worker entitlements, so yesterday's courtruling means its collection is no longer justified," he said.
"It would be a great Christmas present if it could all be wrapped up by Christmas Eve.
"It's no longer needed and keeping it operating only creates an overhang in governmentcollection ... the money is better in the hands of the individual travellers."
Mr Huttner said that as soon as the airline was told to stop collecting taxes by thefederal government, it would immediately lower all of its fares by $10 a round trip.
"Everyday we're collecting more money and we hope the government recognises it wouldbe of great benefit to all travellers during the holiday season to get rid of this taxas soon as possible," he said.
